The golden handprint of Saint Euphemia
Susanne Stiegeler placed a golden handprint on a selected rock on Fruga. This handprint is supposed to be the real handprint of St. Euphemia: a saint, who receives special veneration in the regional cultural life around Rab.
In dealing with this cultural-historical phenomenon, the artist expanded the legend and reception of the martyr: in addition to a poetic text, two iconic paintings and a cultic object were created.
The supposed ceremony around St. Euphemia’s golden handprint was captured in a pseudo-documentary short film in collaboration with artist Rita Leppiniemi (Finland). These and other interventions enrich the existing legend of the saint. Its credibility is thus further substantiated in the spirit of traditional popular piety.
